Not my idea; but it does bring up an important point

right..?

Topic idea found here: http://timesplitters4.net/index.php/topic,2942.0.html

I know at least a few people here can understand what he's getting at. You know, how less and less video games are including an offline-multiplayer, in favor of online. This just plain sucks for people without internet, who don't care about playing online, or have excessively strict parents. The alarming thing is that it's not just FPSs, but racing games, RPGs (like the new FFXIV, or so I heard), sport games, and it's becoming more and more common in genres where off-line multi-player once was huge. Obviously, I've been seeing this a lot more than most of you, since I'm a huge fan of racing games and a few FPSs, or more specifically, Unreal Tournament 3 and TimeSplitters. (Everything else that is FPS is either unimportant or I hardly care about it. (see: Halo)) So, what do you think?

Err.. I hope I'm not posting a thread that was already posted.

Video games also contain single-player modes. Often they give me that sense of realism without the human interaction that involves 12-year olds swearing at me. Not that I'm bashing multiplayer. I just prefer to avoid it because I know I'm as annoying as all the people I criticise.

It's a pretty valid observation, but not one that I readily care about. It's just simply something that game developers are beginning to care less and less about since the majority of gamers have an internet connection with which to play online. Plus, if they devote more time to something that doesn't get quite as stale over time as single player, they can rake in more players over time.

I understand. I can even see how some games are starting to forsake Single Player as well, like how some RPGs (FFXI and the soon to be released FFXIV, or so I heard) are only online and have no separate offline single player. To tell you the truth, UT3 hardly has a single player either, ignoring the fact that you can play against the bots offline. All you have is two player split-screen, campaign/ instant action, and online. The only difference between campaign and instant action is there's pre-made story for instant action. I guess you could say that's one of UT3's biggest issues. All UT3's campaign grinds down to is a bunch of instant action matches with a storyline loosely attached.

I don't really like how every game seems to need multiplayer (online or offline) these days. Honestly, as long as single player campaigns are gimped/stories cut down, then I don't care. As for Final Fantasy XIV, I don't really understand why everyone bitches about it being online. Final Fantasy XIII is coming out a few months before it, so just play that. I mean, yeah, it sucks it costs money, but people buy DLC all the time, so it's the same issue, really.

The problem here is that more and more games are dropping offline multi-player in favor of online though. This is not only making having more than one controller (besides as a back-up) increasingly pointless, but also killing what was once a staple of many games. Personally, I'd be pissed to find out that the new TS (whenever it finally gets made) follows the trend and drops the offline multi-player, which made the franchise the niche it was/ has became. After all, TS was once considered heir apparent to Goldeneye, which is considered the ultimate FPS, or at least the mother/ father/ granddaddy (however you look at it) of all FPSs.

I don't like to play games online that much anymore. Too many little annoying kids on it that pull me out of the games. I really only play Diablo II and Counter Strike anymore online though. Most of what I play are single-player only story driven RPGs.
