The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

Pretty surprising, honestly. When I woke up and saw the headline, I almost didn't believe it for a second.

However, I think anyone following Obama's international efforts to date can see he at least deserved to be nominated.

He got the prize for having the vision and the power to act on it? Interesting.
He certainly has done good things internationally, probably aided by the fact that he isn't an old white guy and projects a better image to foreign nations.

I don't think he really deserves the award, but I honestly don't care. There's always the possibility that there were simply no others to consider at the time.

Either way, it is interesting.

That's not exactly what I meant; I mean to say that they might not have had any others that compared much to Obama, which is admittedly hard to believe, but hey, it can happen.

Dies first.

I don't think he really deserved it. Yet, at least. He's got great visions and such, but he hasn't really done a whole lot at this point. But he's in the process of plenty of things that explain why he was nominated.

Can someone tell me what Obama has actually done so far? Whether or not it's my own ignorance and unwillingness to read or watch the news, I don't recall Obama actually doing anything of particular significance as of yet.

His main claim to fame as of yet is that he's done some pretty successful negotiations with Russia regarding their and our stockpile of nuclear weapons. I think they're trying to draw up a treaty that'll cut that number down, how much, I don't know.

You have to realize that this is basically an anti-Bush prize; it feels largely thankful of Obama for drawing us away from that Bush mentality.

Oh, I actually learned of another nominee who built over 130 schoolhouses in Pakistan or something. He definitely deserves the award more, but like I said, I'm quite apathetic toward the whole thing. It's not a good thing, but it's certainly not as catastrophic as some are making it seem.

That's what I got from another article, as well.

I'm pretty thankful to Obama anyways for being the first good president in a long time, I don't honestly care about some medal being awarded to anybody.
